Urban Scape Sensengasse - plan

A new building complex that combines the House of Research, various university facilities, residential usages, as well as university sports venues arose in a central Viennese location in an area of the 9th District that had not been publicly accessible up to then. The common public open space forms the connecting clip of this unusual usage mix.

The landscape planning initially included the creation of an open space concept for this city area, which had remained undeveloped for a long time, with a dense stock of trees as the basis of the architectural competition for the individual structural components. Moreover, the inward-lying open areas along with a sports ground were planned, which opened up new route relations in the district. Finally, the new design of the pedestrian areas of the adjoining streets and in the Sensengasse, as a front zone sophisticatedly laid out with steps, ramps and lines of seats. The new free space opens up to the city and connects the area with the neighboring park and the university campus lying on the opposite side.
